Field studies were conducted at three locations in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate weed control and crop response to metolachlor plus combinations of 0.5 × and 1 × label rates of imazaquin applied preplant and imazethapyr applied early postemergence or postemergence in no-till narrow-row soybean production. Giant foxtail, common ragweed, common cocklebur, and large crabgrass population reductions were greater with sequential preplant metolachlor plus imazaquin followed by early postemergence or postemergence imazethapyr than with preplant metolachlor plus imazaquin or early postemergence/postemergence imazethapyr alone. Ivyleaf morningglory was not effectively controlled by any herbicide program. Pennsylvania smartweed populations were reduced with all herbicide treatments. Soybean yields with treatments utilizing 0.5 × rates were usually equal to 1 × rates if imazethapyr was applied early postemergence or postemergence. Net income with reduced herbicide rates was equal to full-label rates and provided no greater risk to net income.

Field studies were conducted at three locations in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate weed control and crop response to combinations of glyphosate, metolachlor, 0.5 X and 1 X label rates of chlorimuron plus metribuzin applied prior to planting (PP), and 0.5 X and 1 X label rates of imazethapyr applied early postemergence (EPOST) or postemergence (POST) in no-till narrow-row soybean production. Giant foxtail densities were reduced with sequential PP followed by (fb) EPOST or POST treatments. Large crabgrass was reduced equivalently with all herbicide combinations involving chlorimuron plus metribuzin PP fb imazethapyr. Common cocklebur control was variable but was usually greater with treatments that included imazethapyr. Ivyleaf morningglory densities were not reduced with any herbicide combinations. Sequential PP fb EPOST or POST treatments tended to provide slightly better weed suppression than PP-only treatments, but the difference was rarely significant. Soybean yields with treatments utilizing 0.5 X rates were usually equal to 1 X rates.

In North America, terrestrial records of biodiversity and climate change that span Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 are rare. Where found, they provide insight into how the coupling of the ocean–atmosphere system is manifested in biotic and environmental records and how the biosphere responds to climate change. In 2010–2011, construction at Ziegler Reservoir near Snowmass Village, Colorado (USA) revealed a nearly continuous, lacustrine/wetland sedimentary sequence that preserved evidence of past plant communities between ~140 and 55 ka, including all of MIS 5. At an elevation of 2705 m, the Ziegler Reservoir fossil site also contained thousands of well-preserved bones of late Pleistocene megafauna, including mastodons, mammoths, ground sloths, horses, camels, deer, bison, black bear, coyotes, and bighorn sheep. In addition, the site contained more than 26,000 bones from at least 30 species of small animals including salamanders, otters, muskrats, minks, rabbits, beavers, frogs, lizards, snakes, fish, and birds. The combination of macro- and micro-vertebrates, invertebrates, terrestrial and aquatic plant macrofossils, a detailed pollen record, and a robust, directly dated stratigraphic framework shows that high-elevation ecosystems in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado are climatically sensitive and varied dramatically throughout MIS 5.

Objective
Non-compliance with food record submission can induce bias in nutritional epidemiological analysis and make it difficult to draw inference from study findings. We examined the impact of demographic, lifestyle and psychosocial factors on such non-compliance during the first 3 years of participation in a multidisciplinary prospective paediatric study.
DesignThe Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study collects a 3 d food record quarterly during the first year of life and semi-annually thereafter. High compliance with food record completion was defined as the participating families submitting one or more days of food record at every scheduled clinic visit.
SettingThree centres in the USA (Colorado, Georgia/Florida and Washington) and three in Europe (Finland, Germany and Sweden).
SubjectsFamilies who finished the first 3 years of TEDDY participation (n 8096).
ResultsHigh compliance was associated with having a single child, older maternal age, higher maternal education and father responding to study questionnaires. Families showing poor compliance were more likely to be living far from the study centres, from ethnic minority groups, living in a crowded household and not attending clinic visits regularly. Postpartum depression, maternal smoking behaviour and mother working outside the home were also independently associated with poor compliance.
ConclusionsThese findings identified specific groups for targeted strategies to encourage completion of food records, thereby reducing potential bias in multidisciplinary collaborative research.

Data from a community-based prospective longitudinal study were used to investigate the association of minor depressive disorder during adolescence with adverse mental health outcomes during adulthood. Structured diagnostic interviews were administered to a community-based sample of 755 individuals during adolescence and adulthood. Results indicated that minor depressive disorder during adolescence was associated with elevated risk for subsequent psychiatric disorders during adulthood, including major depressive disorder, ⩾1 disruptive disorders and clinically relevant impairment after corresponding and co-occurring disorders were controlled statistically.

Background
Little is currently known about functioning and impairment during adulthood associated with the course of personality disorders.
AimsTo investigate the association of personality disorder stability from adolescence through middle adulthood with measures of global functioning and impairment, using prospective epidemiological data.
MethodA community-based sample of 658 individuals was interviewed at mean ages 14, 16, 22 and 33 years.
ResultsIndividuals with persistent personality disorder had markedly poorer functioning and greater impairment at mean age 33 years than did those who had never been identified as having such disorder or who had a personality disorder that was in remission, after co-occurring Axis I disorders at age 33 years were taken into account. Remitted disorder was associated with mild long-term impairment. Adult-onset personality disorders, however, were also associated with significant impairment.
ConclusionsPersistent and adult-onset personality disorders are associated with functional impairment among adults in the community. These effects are independent of co-occurring Axis 1 disorders.

Cluster A odd or eccentric personality disorder (PD) symptoms may reflect a schizophrenia spectrum biological vulnerability in at least some persons. Consequently, this symptom pattern may have particularly negative effects on the transition from adolescent to adult roles. A general population sample of 200 young adults was assessed on Cluster A PD at mean ages 17 and 22, and subsequently provided detailed narratives about their monthly experiences and behaviors between these two ages. Adolescent Cluster A PD was related to the developmental trajectories of residential, career, financial, romantic, and family formation roles during this period, and trajectories were related to a change in symptoms over this period. Symptoms were associated with early parenthood and less advanced education, but for other developmental outcomes tended to differ for men and women. These gender differences were attributable, in part, to the differential meaning and consequences of early parenthood for men and women.

Summary
FROM NEW INDUSTRY TO THE NEW ECONOMY
The corporate history of BASF (Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik, founded in 1865), spans an era of German and international economic history that began with the rise of the “new industries” as of the late nineteenth century and continues today in their confrontation with the new economy. BASF is one of the pioneers of that “second economic revolution,” whose significance in the eyes of Douglass C. North, a founding father of New Institutional Economics, far surpasses that of other economic turning points such as the Industrial Revolution. Ever since BASF was created in the midst of this revolutionary upheaval, it has had a hand in actively laying the groundwork and shaping the conditions of this stage of western economic life. The company embodies a special symbiosis between business and scientific research, one that has constituted the essence of economic value-added – and not only at BASF – from the outset but also increasingly in the economy at large.
The new industries of the late nineteenth century long ago became mainstays of the German economy. They now determine the tempo of growth, sustain the labor market, and influence what happens on the stock market. They are responsible for the leading role of exports as well. It is certainly no exaggeration to say that the future of the German economy (and many others) in the postindustrial age depends on the fate of these industries and on their competitiveness on the world market.

Summary
A COMPANY IN TRANSITION
BASF at the Paris World Exposition of 1900
In 1899 the BASF accepted the invitation of the German government to participate in a collective exhibition of the German chemical industry at the Paris World Exposition of 1900. The company had been reluctant to join the others, in that there would not be enough space for an individual company display, and within the collective exhibition individual companies could not be identified. How would the company find a way to bring attention to its unique attributes?
The enforced collectivity and anonymity of the German chemical industry's display at Paris extended to the official catalog, which did not contain an index connecting individual products displayed to the companies that produced them. Yet the anonymity that might have troubled a smaller competitor could hardly have been a serious disadvantage for BASF, then the world's largest manufacturer of artificial dyes. As reported by the editor of Die chemische Industrie, Dr. Otto N. Witt, BASF played a central role in two main sections of the display. Section I featured the products of the heavy chemical industry, among them the “epoch making advance” embodied in BASF's contact process for the direct production of concentrated sulfuric acid, which annually absorbed some 80,000 tons of pyrites. The company's role in Section VI, the artificial dyes, was even more central.

The corporate history of BASF spans an era of German and international economic history that began with the rise of the 'new industries' as of the late nineteenth century and continues today in their confrontation with the new economy. This book examines BASF's corporate governance, financial system, industrial relations, system of qualification and relation to other companies. A corporate history of BASF promises more than an insight into the functioning of an industrial organisation. It also reveals the reasons for the extraordinary economic dynamics of the German empire and the enormous expansion of the world economy before World War I. BASF's history stands at the centre of Germany's wartime economy during two world wars and highlights both its strengths and weaknesses. Just as the IG Farben trust helped support Germany's course of politicoeconomic autarky after 1933, so it was that BASF helped facilitate West Germany's startlingly quick return to the world market. BASF has since been among the transnational companies whose efforts at the leading edge of economic and technological progress are paradigmatic for Germany's entry into the new economy of the twenty-first century.

Summary
THE PAST HAS A FUTURE: LAUNCHING BASF ANEW
The Refounding
Operationally, January 30, 1952, was a day like any other at the Ludwigshafen and Oppau plants of IG Farbenindustrie. Thoughthe trust was being dissolved, production had been running at full capacitysince the beginning of a worldwide boom triggered by the Korean War. The plant's 26,415 employees were completely occupied trying to meet the rapidly burgeoning domestic and international demand and to eliminate the last production obstacles remaining from war damage, the catastrophic explosion in July 1948, and the postwar program of industrial dismantling in Germany. The number of personnel still lagged behind the peak of 37,400 reached in 1943, but it already clearly exceeded the prewar level of 23,500 recorded in 1938. Turnover had soared accordingly, with exports accounting for one-third of the company's sales. When the “founders” and the members of the supervisory board designated by them toured the complex before notarization, they could not fail to see that it was already well onthe rise again and thoroughly capable of participating in the expected expansion of the markets. Like other veterans of the old BASF, Alwin Mittasch, Carl Bosch's former colleague and long-standing director of Oppau's ammonia laboratory, was visibly overwhelmed by all the evidence “of the irrepressible vitality inherent in our beloved Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik.”
Against this background, Carl Wurster, too, found it difficult to adequately describe the complexity of breaking up the trust and of observing proper protocol when greeting the founders and supervisory board members who had appeared for there-establishment of BASF.
